Open a Bank

In order to get paid for ANY work you do in Australia, you will need an Australian bank account. There is a lot of choice and what type of bank you open is completely down to your personal choice. You only need your passport and an Australian proof of address (this can be from a Backpacker Hostel, friend of families address or even a Post Office), you will also need to provide them your tax file number (TFN) but this can be done at a later date if its not sent to you by the time your'e setting your bank up.

The most popular options for banks for international are:

  1. ANZ (Australian and New Zealand Banking Group)

  2. Commonwealth

  3. NAB (National Australia Bank)

  4. Westpac

TTB Tip: You can start this process from your home country

Australian Sim

You will struggle to get a contract plan while on temporary visas while in Australia, however there are some great deals with prepaid sims which come with texts, minutes, data and usually international calls too for around $30AUD per month. These sims will only work in an unlocked phone, which is easier to do from your home country than when here.

Most popular phone networks are:

  1. Telstra (best coverage nationwide)

  2. Boost (best coverage nationwide)

  3. Optus (adequate cover)

  4. Vodafone (limited national coverage)

Tax File Number (TFN)

Your TFN is a compulsory identification number which allows you to legally work and pay taxes while in Australia. You need to give this to every employer and complete a tax return in June every year (end of financial year)

You can apply for this online on the ATO website, in an ATO office or over the phone 132861

If you are planning to work in Australia, you must obtain a TFN, however once you have applied you can usually commence work straight away as you will be provided with a proof of application document you can show to your new empoloyer

Register For Medicare

In Australia, the healthcare system is similar to that in the Netherlands and France and is called Medicare. This service is usually for Australian citizens and permanent residents only, However, certain countries are allowed to use this service. If your country is allowed then we strongly recommend registering for this service (even if you have insurance)
