Are you Aussie ready?

So you made it across the planet.... now what?

Travel, work, regional work, party?

All of the above?

There's just a few things you need to do before you make any crazy decisions

Set up your bank

Apply for your TFN

And get Medicare

Snooooooze right?! So boring!! BUT.. good news is, you can get it all done in a day and then go about your Aussie Dream and wait for the system to set you up while you deal with your hangover or figure out how to get out that national park before it gets dark and scary. (Whats that crawling on your shoulder....? relax its probably not poisonous!)

You're going to need a few things....

Passport

Tax File Number (TFN)

An Aussie address (this can be anywhere, even you hostel)

A phone number (not got an Aussie one yet? you can probably grab a sim from your hostel reception for free)

Start by sorting out your TFN - if you want to work that is, because you can't do so without one. Its a compulsory identification number which allows you to work legally. You can apply for this online on the ATO website, in and ATO office or over the phone 132861

Then call one of the city banks such as ANZ or Westpac and make an appointment to go and set up your bank, taking the above mentioned docos (that's Aussie for documents by the way) with you and they will literally do the rest.

Don't worry about your tax file number as you can give this to them at a later date, as long as its pending

Finally, and this is the most boring for last, sort out your medicare. Medicare is actually very interesting and useful, if you get sick or injured but you have to sit in the local Medicare office for, well... it could be hours, depending on how busy they are.

TTB tip, make sure you have both your bank and your TFN pending before going to the office and bring all the docos mentioned above.

I'd also bring with you a full phone battery and a good pair of earphone - listen out for your name to be called though as they will just move on if you miss it. You do not need an appointment so just go whenever you want.

Now that didn't take long did it...? Can probably sort all that out in one arvo (Aussie for afternoon if you didn't guess that) and be back on the scooners (Aussie beer measurement as they don't do pints) by happy hour.
